I only heard of it in about 2012 when my husband found it (somewhere) and began showing it to the kids and me. Most of the kids were fairly young back then (we have 7) and I wasn’t sure I would like it. But...I was absolutely hooked from the first three episodes.
That series contains so many deep truths and opportunities for intense thinking. It’s timeless.
This is all a control-narrative in breakdown. There is no working control narrative.
This is several emergencies at once for various ruling-elites without good control-levers, as the western world goes into part-2 of the 2008 crisis, which can't be pulled-back this time.
Frantic negotiations may be underway, but we can't see that.
Look, the reason that the 'Intelligence' community get away with psychopathic and pathological lying, day after day, month after month, decade after decade, is simple: there is no overwhelming punishment for them which would make them prefer to tell the truth.
If you ever want truth from the Intelligence services, they must be threatened with a wipe out of their own bloodlines.
They don't have consciences, so can't be appealed to via decency. They have merely a 'Weltanschauuing' (translated from, German as 'a way of looking at the world') that puts their own interests first, second and last. They operate in the shadows because they are too cowardly to do what they do under public scrutiny. They have contempt for democratic processes, as they are 'a class apart', allowed to do whatever they want, whenever they want, no matter how murderous, no matter how evil, no matter how contemptible
Their sole criterion for judging their own actions is this: 'did we get away with it, will we be getting richer as a result of it and will that wealth continue to grow if we keep behaving like that in future?'
Just imagine Jake Sullivan, George Soros, Bill Gates et al et al having to swear an oath that their children would be minced to death if they lied under oath, eh? None of that namby pamby 'I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God', eh?
'I fully understand that my bloodline will be wiped out and my capability to ever reproduce again will be terminated if I do anything but telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, not worrying about whether God exists or not'?
When you have to deal with conscience-free Group Think, Global Cabal exceptionalism, you can't afford to use rules which require the concepts of shame, conscience and probity to be invoked.
There's a real danger here that the obsession with 'saving one lost soul' through 'Christian Forgiveness' will lead down a road to mass genocide, when all that is required is a bit more of 'these scum are beyond redemption and no-one should give a damn about their fate'....
I'm not sure that threatening the children of a sociopath is the way to gain the compliance of the sociopath. See the disconnect there?
I see what you are saying, and you are not the only one, but instilling fear in sociopaths who command armies and nukes might be less likely to succeed than offering them a better and less-threatening alternative, then another, then another; never directly threatening them.
That's more complicated.
We need glasses and we are trying to thread a very fine needle.
The smart lady has the unfortunate match with the Oil Drum, caught in a mind trap of cheap oil being the only means to power the economy. Arguing about renewables is just more words, and over the years I got tired of her news.
I participated in an Austrian Economic mail order course in 1982 and I continue to be amazed how much this money has expanded over this time period. I have come to the conclusion the money won't fail until the planet's resource extraction begin a serious descent.
The economy is a very fancy heat-dissipative system.
Economists don't think or speak of it like that.
I'm not alone in thinking that global-real-economy peaked in the second half of 2019, but that's not for the general public, like us, to know.
The issue with renewables is that they take mineral resources, oil and a modern industrial economy, hitting on all 8 cylinders to manufacture and to install as working infrastructure systems. Gail is fond of pointing out every step along the way...
Not my point. I will try to be more clear. Renewables as a replacement for fossil fuels is a red herring, not worthy of discussion. The issue should be how does society cope with the pollution. But that's too distant of views, so how about how does society cope with a decline of fossil fuel production, when it finally does arrive? Which, after tapping Venezuela, would be put off far into the future.
LFR. Lead cooled fast reactors. A little more tech on the metallurgical corrosion issues in the containments with molten lead coolant and who knows? Magnitudes greater efficiencies, multi fuel as well as using existing stored waste. ???
In my view (and life style) there is little reason to not to be efficient at the personal level. Could you or I live with less tech and access? Pretty sure we could. Do I want to? Not really, I'm a pretty good camper, and gardener as well, I like my life. I'm pretty good with the tech I use. not a luddite by any means. Do the second order environmental effects of rampant uncontrolled energy use make me feel bad? Yes. Do I hate myself for it? No.
Have you read Ted Kaczinski's manifesto? Published in the New York times and Washington post by the way. Haha. I have been told Ted was a Marxist? I don't think so. Many of his predictions have come true, especially his warning on the gene tech medicine stuff. Ted just want to blow shit up to disrupt our technocratic way of life, a self organizing and self feeding beast. Did he have a solution for the reorganization of society after it was disrupted? No he didn't and that's where the Marxist label fails. They did and it didn't work.
All the stuff you post up here time after time illuminates the problems but seldom offers any solutions. I appreciate your offering of self sufficient gardening and such, but it's not even close to being enough John. Adapt create and endure. Lets get busy. You do medicine out of the garage and I'll be there. Ivan Illich 'Tools For Conviviality'. You will enjoy
Can't practice nedicine out of a garage. So, so many laws and expenses now. All medical practitioners have to comply with a very expensive system. There is no way that Iwould be able to keep up with compliance costs, let alone make income.
I think it will come down to every building have its own multiple power sources. Just think of the money saved not having to pay the monopoly utilities with their expensive energy.
Net fossil-fuel after expending fuel to get fuel may well be in early decline already.
Nobody wants that to be knowable.
The Venezuelan and Canadian tar-oil requires so much energy to get out of the ground that it is a useful feed stock for certain things, but cannot power an economy. Other fuel, cheaper to obtain, needs to mainly power the economy.
Cheap energy can support a complex economy, but the US economy is probably the most complex for what it actually makes and does, so it needs to get much simpler when it reconstitutes itself in the coming financial (real this time) re-set.
The US will need to export stuff to get imports. Everything will get expensive and hard to find.
It is likely to resemble the decade after the collapse of the USSR, best I can tell.
Yankee came home with that thousand mile stare war after war until the war came home to stay after 2019.
I am talking about societies drained of their essence, cultures trampled underfoot, institutions undermined, lands confiscated, religions smashed, magnificent artistic creations destroyed, extraordinary possibilities wiped out.

This is a GREAT idea. And our family loves Babylon 5!
Babylon 5 was the last TV show I watched semi-regularly.
It ended in 1999. I gave up TV for the new-millennium.

The pipeline story is another false binary.

"The smart lady" you refer to is probably "Gail the Actuary" from TOD, Gail Tverberg.
Her analysis is quite like that of Dr. Tim Morgan at Surplus Energy Economics https://surplusenergyeconomics.wordpress.com/

Will there be electricity at the grocery stores? Will credit cards work?
I'm trying to assume less.

Betting on the come. Nothing is real until it becomes real. Just words to keep optimism (happy juices) flowing.
no doubt, but you have to show up for the future with the tools you have and understand. Imagination seems to be scarce these days.

You actually commented when I posted about Nate Hagen's admission he changed his mind on this event as a lower EROEI ratio results in higher GDP.
In my view more productive work than the people who use these power sources in frivolous pursuits. Alan Greenspan would approve. I am being nice!
I don't recall that, or what Nate's expressed thoughts were.
There are a lot of ways to get more GDP, buying everything on credit cards, for instance.
It's a weird calculation
I can think of numerous alternative Poetic Justice scenarios for the Bad Actors, none fit for publication. I like yours, though. :-)
