John Helmer has an extensive review of a Russian national survey in depth and detail, notably inquiring into views on the management of the war in Ukraine. Putin’s support percentages in many sub demographics are well laid out, and his overall support for his cautious Ukraine war policy, being careful to avoid traps for nuclear war provocations, are about 80% supported, the same as his overall support rating. There were a lot of speculations that Russians supported his war management less, and certain specific demographics do. It is an instructive read. A sample is excerpted. PUTIN’S LINE ON ORESHNIK AND TRUMP IS THE RUSSIAN CONSENSUS AMERICANS DON’T UNDERSTAND As part of the September poll, a survey experiment — already conducted by Levada several times before — was again repeated. With the help of a random number generator, the survey participants were divided into two equal groups, each of which was asked the question in one of the two formulations.In the first case, respondents were asked to saywhether they would or would not support the President’s decision to end the military conflict immediately without any conditions.In thesecond case, the respondents were asked to answer whether they would support or not support the same decision, but if the condition is that the Novorossiya territories are returned.
The majority of respondents — 80%, this has grown by 18 percentage points since May 2023 — would support the decision of Putin if “this week” he decided to end the military conflict with Ukraine. However, if “this week” Putin decided to end the conflict on the condition that the annexed territories are returned, then his decision would be supported by a significantly smaller number of Russians – a third of the respondents; that is to say 33%, an increase of 5 percentage points since February 2025.
More often than not, the President would be supported in the decision to end the military conflict this week by women (84%); young people under 25 (93%); those who believe that things in the country are on the wrong track (88%); those who approve of Putin’s performance as president (84%); those who trust social networks and telegram channels as sources of information (89% each); those who support the activities of the Russian military in Ukraine (97%); and those who believe that military action should continue now (95%).
Comparatively speaking, the decision of the President to end the military conflict immediately is not supported by men (18%); older respondents (20% aged 55 and older); residents of Moscow (19%); those who believe that things in the country are going in the right direction (15%); those who approve of the performance of Putin as president (14%); those who trust television as a source of information (17%); those who support the actions of the Russian military in Ukraine (18%); and those who believe that military action should continue (34%). https://johnhelmer.net/putins-line-on-oreshnik-and-trump-is-the-russian-consensus-americans-dont-understand/

German industry is quite serious, and if money is put into it, you know, they can build good arms.
So the situation is not a six-month perspective. The situation that Europe is looking at is a four-year perspective. And you know something? It can work like that. And that is precisely why I’ve changed my mind about the wisdom of the “go slow, don’t rock the boat, don’t challenge the West too much” policy of Putin. From my following this, I would like to call out that the latest Ukrainian remarks on what they have to import, or on how Russia has now lost its refinery capacity, 30, 50 percent or more of Russian production and refining has been stopped. The Russians are importing gasoline and so forth. As typically, the Ukrainians are projecting onto the Russians what is happening in Ukraine. Ukraine is importing, Russia is not importing anything in this regard.
However, the Russians have had serious losses of refining capacity and of other energy infrastructure due to Ukrainian strikes. And some of those strikes were directed by Americans. Let’s be quite open about this. It isn’t discussed in media, but it is known that the most recent strikes by Ukraine on Russian gas and oil infrastructure [were] using HIMARS, and it was Americans who were directing those HIMARS.
This is a very serious escalation. The damage was considerable. In Russian news you hear nothing about the extensive destruction of their energy infrastructure by Ukrainian attacks. What you do here, and this is mostly in social media, is in this region or that region there is a shortage of fuel. Now, when this comes to a discussion, public discussion, the Russian patriots will tell you, “Ah, this is the season of the harvest. The diesel fuel and other fuel is in short supply for that reason.”
Rubbish. It’s in short supply because refineries were struck. The issue is very serious. And the Russian response was also serious. They’ve had in the last few days massive attacks by missiles and drones on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure across the country. Hamas has not agreed to any demilitarization or destruction of its tunnels. There is no way to demilitarize Gaza and neutralize Hamas of its weapons against their will without continued warfare, something Israel has demonstrated it cannot do without killing shocking numbers of civilians.
