The panic / celebration over the Kharkiv offensive separated sheep & goats among the analysis community - the only people who understood what was happening being commentators with relevant military experience. No, the NATO/Ukraine Kherson offensive did NOT "surprise" Russia - how could it with satellite surveillance that over 7 months have picked off everything from stray tanks to arms depots, deployment centres, road and rail munitions transport etc. Russia's tactical retreat drew NATO / AFU out of hiding in the nearby forests onto a flat open plain with the same results as in Kherson. The following attack on electrical infrastructure meant that NATO's supply lines to the fronts are cut off. Not all of this infrastructure can be restored quickly. Thus NATO's terrain is severly fragmented and downgraded.
