It's easy to take more and more steps to control the essence of life, assuming that life will always persist and will exert a force which you can harness by these manipulative interventions, but life outside of the intervention-group sometimes has to be killed to force only-that-pathway to work, as with GM crops.
If all avenues but one are eliminated, that one will leave nothing when it ceases to exist, and an arm of the tree of life will be gone.

I had the distinct pleasure of conversation over a home-cooked supper last night with one of the principals in a group working on a globally-viable, -secure, and -scalable blockchain platform. So we wended our way through topics such as basic market principles (which 98% of current "markets" violate), the problem of public goods, the kaleidoscope-in-a-blender picture of which shadowy actors appear to be pursuing what agendas, general systems theory, and thermodynamics.
As a Christian I see most of what's been happening like *forever* much of what you describe: Subjugation, degradation, perversion ("intervention"), lying, obfuscation, universal narrative control...my new friend and I basically came to agreement that this doubling- and quintupling-down on stupid MUST be shut down somehow or the whole house of cards will collapse to the ruin of all. We need to "add entropy" to the lies, the manipulating, and inflated values so that there is a controlled descent.
I don't know whether that is possible, though; the shot-callers seem to be so deeply invested in their rebellion and desperate control that the necessary changes aren't just extremely unattractive to them; they are unable to even countenance such measures.
Eliminating entire branches...hubris mortgaging with matches...one might hope that these things might be self-limiting, but it seemed pretty obvious to us that the scientific, medical, governance and finance problems facing us now are "hard" self-limiters, i.e., not the kind of self-limiting any sane person would want.
I think the debt bubble, which draws future consumption into the present, will pop at all levels. The "owners" want a power-regime in place that keeps them in control of the much-deflated economy.
We, the rest of us, need them to NOT be in control of the mess, so we can make some sense, starting at personal, small group, and local levels.
The "owners" need extreme violence to keep imposing their hierarchical rent-extraction model, whereas most of humanity needs debt-jubilee.
That means retirement plans go POOF!

Paying off debt and investing in the future, like owning our homestead with garden, goes against the current of debt-spending and rent extraction.
