I came across the story of Sabbatia Zevi and the Kabbalists only recently and found it an extraordinary story. To modern sensibilities it sounds insane, but these 'inverted' beliefs were not uncommon in the Balkans and have a very long history. The origins of this belief seem to trace way back to dualist belief systems from ancient Persia. The Yazidis directly continue this tradition of Satan worship.
