The "Syrian Civil War" began in March of 2011, essentially because Syria would not facilitate passage of a natural gas pipeline from Qatar to Europe, to marginalize Russia and Iran in that important energy-supply trade, a Pipeline war by proxy mercenaries, funded and supplied by the CIA, Qatar, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Saudi Arabia has withdrawn support now.

After 2015, when Russia intervened to save Syria, there were 5 years of war where the Syrian Arab Army fought Turkish, Kurdish/American, ISIS and Israeli forces to a point of ceasefire, with foreign backed forces encamped upon the oilfields and best farmland of Syria, where they have been preparing a major offensive since Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022. That has now been sprung, after Ukrainian trainers taught the Salafist mercenaries how to use reconnaissance and attack drones against fixed positions, in lightening-advance strikes.

The "realpolitik" of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly Nusa Front, has been facilitated by Israel, Qatar and NATO countries, making deals ahead of time to advance into cities rapidly, without any resistance from local power-brokers. Syrian Arab Army forces have had to retreat and retreat, abandoning cities without resistance, their communications completely blacked-out by electronic interference, unprepared for this kind of warfare. They have to hold the line at Homs, or Syria will be cut off from the Mediterranean, and Russia may lose their base at Tartus. This is existential for Syria, for Hezbollah and the Resistance Axis, and for Iran, just as it is also a last sprint for battle-fatigued and over-extended Israeli military forces.

Russia and Iran will supposedly sign their mutual defense pact about the time that Trump takes office, but they will already have to save Syria in this next week or so. Airstrikes are not doing it against this massive, well-planned, well prepared and funded, motorized push to overrun Syria, while Russia and Hezbollah are otherwise busily occupied. elsewhere. Iran has sent special forces advisors, and will need to send ground forces rapidly, but also knows that they are expected by Israel and the US, and will be hit hard. If Iran escalates "too hard", then Israel will draw in the US directly against Iran, as is their long term strategic plan. Neocons in the US seem to want this, and see their chances at their kind of "success" rapidly fading in coming weeks, if they do not act decisively to create this major war, which Trump will have to accept as an existing fact. How much advanced air-defense, of the S400 and Iranian counterparts variety, will Iran be able to bring into play against the Israeli air force? It will be vulnerable, but necessary to the effort. What more can Russia do? Russia has drone and electronic warfare expertise, but is using all of that to advance rapidly in Novorussiya (Eastern Ukraine). The mutual defense treaty which Russia and North Korea signed went into actual effect Wednesday. (I didn't know that it had a start-timer on it.) That does open the door to North Korean troops helping out against the Ukrainian forces which invaded Russia, and are having a hard time holding territory, while taking heavy losses. This is also existential for the western Banking + NATO empire, which makes this into World War-3, whatever specific forms it may take as it progresses. European and US arms of various sorts are already badly depleted, and production has never been able to approach battlefield needs in the Ukrainian war-of-attrition in men, tanks, drones, missiles and artillery shells. Draining Russia into the Mideast is clearly appealing, and capturing Syria would cut the axis-of-resistance into pieces without connections and supply lines. Can Iranian supply lines to Hezbollah be definitively cut before Salafist mercenaries, who have no real home, are exhausted? The NATO-proxy blitzkrieg-with-drones-and-electronic-warfare has not been impeded yet. Time is very short to stop this decisive ground invasion. This is bound to escalate rapidly, of necessity all-around. Both sides, BRIICS and US/Israel/NATO are fully-committed. Will China get involved? Now would be the time to supply a bunch of drones and operators...
